Have you heard about MTV’s controversial new show Faking It? It’s about two teenage girls who are mistakenly outed as lesbians, which launches them to instant celebrity status. They decided to keep pretending they are a couple so they can remain popular.

Faking It showrunner Carter Covington, a gay man, has told BuzzFeed that he initially found the premise of Faking It offensive, but changed his mind when he decided that the idea was plausible in a modern high school, where having your sexuality be your “thing” can help rather than hinder.

On the other hand, Hope Schreiber from Complex points out “If this goes wrong, it'll be the teen sitcom version of drunk girls making out at the party for a crowd of cheering guys.”

Yeah, we’re really not sure about this one … have a look at the trailer for yourself.

Faking It premiers in the US in April. It's not yet clear if/when it might screen on MTV in New Zealand.
