The play Black Faggot has won a slot at the Melbourne Fringe Festival after cleaning up at the Auckland Fringe Awards.

It’s won the Tiki Tour Ready Award, granting it the trip across the Tasman.

The production also won the Auckland Fringe Award for Best Production Theatre and the Development Award, which means it will be remounted as part of The Edge’s Development Programme.

Black Faggot will also get financial support from Creative NZ and the Auckland Arts Festival Award, providing mentoring and development opportunities toward a future presentation and $1,000.

Written by Victor Rodger, Black Faggot is a series of comedy monologues exploring the gay Samoan male experience.

It was part of both Auckland Fringe and Auckland Pride.

GayNZ.com’s Jay Bennie found the play “may well be the most poignantly hilarious show, on radio, TV, the movies, the net or on stage, that you'll see for a decade. Probably longer.”

Another joint Pride and Fringe presentation, Salon Mika, picked up Best Performance and Best Production in the cabaret/burlesque category.
