New Zealand's first hockey club for gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender players are heading to the 2008 Melbourne OutGames - and they're confident they'll be bringing home gold.

Hockey Heroes' captain Bren Duckworth says the group are still in the process of organising regular training sessions in preparation for their trip, "but we do have a get together on Monday nights at North Harbour Hockey Stadium in Albany. This is great for a hit around and gets rid of those cobwebs attached to the hockey stick."

Duckworth says he loves the game of hockey for "the speed and adrenaline of the entire 75 minutes.

"I enjoy taking part in a skilful game that requires co-ordination, stability, strength and agility. Not to mention guys in short, shorts," he laughs.

Our Kiwi heroes will take on the Sydney Bentstix and newly-formed Melbourne Bentstix teams at the inaugural Melbourne OutGames at the end of January 2008. The two Aussie clubs have already competed against each other in friendly matches and are looking forward to the trans-Tasman games.

Hockey Heroes is looking for more players to join their team - contact details are on their official website, linked below. There's also a NZ Hockey Heroes Group on Facebook.com, which is linked to the Asia/Pacific Outgames and the Sydney and Melbourne Bentstix.
