Labour MP Tim Barnett and his partner Ramon Maniapoto civil unioned at a ceremony in Waitetoko Marae yesterday afternoon.

The historic complex of buildings, set in a stunning location on the shores of Lake Taupo, is Maniapoto's home Marae.

Invited guests gathered outside the Marae for a traditional Maori welcoming powhiri - the challenge was picked up by Deputy Prime Minister Michael Cullen, before attendees moved onto the Marae.

Barnett was accompanied into the ceremony by MP Margaret Wilson, and Maniapoto by his father. Fuimaono Karl Polutu-Endeman and the Anglican priests officiated.

Readings were given by Georgina Beyer, Michael Cullen, Nanaia Mahuta - a piece from Witi Ihimaera about homophobia in Maori society, and its relevance - and several other friends and relatives. Songs were sung by Moana Maniapoto and her group the Moa Hunters. Tongariro School pupils also performed at the ceremony.

During his vows, Maniapoto jokingly promised to "honour, and somewhat obey" his partner.

Barnett helped to mould New Zealand's Civil Union legislation - which became law in 2004 - and says his ceremony is roughly the 1,150th since they began.
