A range of paintings including portraits of Auckland drag icon Buckwheat and Xena star Lucy Lawless will be auctioned off to support Starship children's hospital next week.

The portraits, by painter Stephen 'Marty' Welch, featured in the TVNZ6 series The Sitting.

Buckwheat spoke to GayNZ.com about her portrait last month: "The attention to detail was incredible, really. I didn't know what to expect, since Marty has lots of different styles that he does. But the more I looked at the finished painting, the more I was impressed. I think he got the essence of Buckwheat down extremely well. It's just strange to see yourself in that great big size!"

Other portraits in the auction include likenesses of Mike Hosking, Suzanne Paul, commentator Pam Corkery, actor Ian Mune, comedienne Jan Maree and radio host Iain Stables.

The auction, to be held in Auckland on Thursday 27 November, is by invitation only. Interested and serious bidders can email thesitting@tvnz.co.nz for an invite.
