Dunedin Pride Week is set to return next month with a Mr. & Miss Pride Week awards night among the events in the planning stages.

Organiser South Murdoch says plans are advancing for a Pride festival happening on 21-29 August, spread over two weekends and one week. She's taking nominations for Mr. & Miss Pride Week via Pride Week's group page on Facebook. The awards night, which will also be a talent show, is planned for Friday 28 August.

"Dunedin Pride Week supports everyone from queer to 'straight but not narrow'. If have a family member or a friend that is queer, show your support and have a great time with us," she invites.

Murdoch is currently drumming up support for a possible Mardi Gras Parade to open Pride Week. Dunedin City Council has provided some funding, and a masquerade theme has been proposed.

The southern city's last Pride Week was in September 2007, but low turnouts and allegations of sabotage by the local council left organisers disappointed, so the decision was made to give Pride Week a rest last year.

This year's Gay Ski Week in Queenstown is planned for 29 August to 6 September, the week after Dunedin Pride Week.
