When Auckland's Central MP Nikki Kaye was asked last night if she favoured law reform which would allow same-sex couples to adopt, she replied simply: "I'm supportive - end of story."
The National Party MP shook hands, spoke and took questions at the start of Gay Auckland Business Association's (GABA) networking meeting in Newmarket.
"For me, I know there are some gay and lesbian parents bringing up children and have been for a long time," she added. "They're doing a great job.
"So in some ways a law change is just a technicality, but I understand that it's an important one."
Kaye fielded questions about motorways and new harbour crossings from the crowd assembled at the event, but also acknowledged the issues transgender Aucklanders face, having read the Human Rights Commission's recent Transgender Inquiry. "I've written to (Justice Minister) Simon Power as I know he's working on changes," she said.
Now ten months into her Parliamentary career, Kaye said she regrets not dropping by at GABA sooner. "I've had a wave of constituency cases to deal with," she explained. "So I haven't been as accessible as I could have been.
"But I'm someone who cares about GABA, and will be more accessible in future."
