In a message sent to GayNZ.com and many alarmed music fans who contacted him to question why the anti-gay hate-mongering Jamaican reggae star was added to January's Gay Day Out line-up, Big Day Out's Kiwi promoter Campbell Smith promised to respond "substantively" to their concerns.

"We were not aware of this history regarding Beenie Man," read an emailed statement from a Big Day Out. Campbell Smith will be discussing this matter with the Big Day Out producers, and he will respond substantively as soon as he can."

Beenie Man is also scheduled to appear at Big Day Out dates in Sydney, the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
