The comedian who apologised for the offence he caused HIV/AIDS sufferers when he said they deserved to be roasted, is turning the tables on himself for charity.
David Fane's agreed to cook a roast dinner for five people and entertain them in their own home, as part of the Gay Auckland Business Association's Jubilee and Charity Auction, which will celebrates the organisation's 25 year anniversary.
Fane was suspended from his radio show for a week when he drunkenly told the audience at a media event last month that HIV sufferers "deserved to be roasted", "Jews were expendable" and "Hitler had a right". He quickly apologised, saying he made a 'stupid, stupid mistake'.
Auction organiser Glenn Sims, a television producer who has worked with Fane in the past, is thrilled the entertainer has agreed to get involved.
"Dave lending his support to the event really speaks volumes about Dave's character and the person he is. The money raised as a result of his involvement will go directly to a range of GLBT causes, some of which will literally help to save lives."
Other items being auctioned off include a dance lesson with Tamiti Coffey and Candy Lane, a consultation with celebrity gardener Tony Murrell. The chance to audition for a role on Shortland St is already being auctioned on Trade Me and has sparked a bidding war which has neared $2,000.
The annual charity auction benefits the GABA Charitable Trust which over the past decade has donated over $150,000 to glbt causes and organisations including Rainbow Youth, Body Positive and the New Zealand Aids Foundation.
