The leaseholder of Wellington's former Imerst nightclub plans to open a new two-level gay club there next month.

"The plans are drawn up, work has begun, and the place will look quite different when it reopens," says Greig Wilson, who also owns Wellington dance party venue SubNine.

Gay nightclub Imerst on Dixon Street closed late last year. The three-level building will soon become two separate clubs which share the same foyer area, Wilson explains. "Upstairs will become Club Ivy - the gay club, which will be two levels. Downstairs will be a separate mainstream events space will an outside terrace smoking area.
"There's a lot of space available, so there's even an opportunity to expand to more bars later.
Wilson is aiming to open Club Ivy in mid-August.
