Akl: Sexuality explored in new art exhibition

An art gallery on K' Road will tomorrow present an installation by respected New Zealand artist Christine Webster which examines issues around desire and vulnerability, intimacy and control amongst various heterosexual, bi-sexual, gay and asexual participants.

Pukekohe-born Webster is one of New Zealand's most prodigious and well-respected talents working in photography and video, with over 20 years' experience exhibiting works which challenge traditional sexual and gender roles.

Deborah Lawler-Dormer of the MIC Toi Rerehiko Gallery describes Webster's Le Dossier installation as a "deeply evocative and erotically charged rumination on cultural mores as they relate to sexuality as well as a sophisticated critique of the role of representation in both maintaining and challenging culturally sanctioned categories of decency."

A new version of the video installation Blindfield will be shown alongside Le Dossier and explores the role of the individual in relation to structures of power.

Webster will also be presenting her latest multi-screen video and sound installation ViGil.

Christine Webster's exhibition will be held at MIC Toi Rerehiko Gallery, Level 1, 321 K' Road, tomorrow - Friday 29 August from 6 until 8pm. The artist's official website is linked below.
