San Franciscans flocked to a park in the city at the weekend for a gay Easter Sunday tradition - to compete in or witness the Hunky Jesus competition.

Michelangelo Jesus is 'Hunky Jesus 2008'
Officiated by a gay charity group known as the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, which has been active in San Francisco since 1979, the contest pits costumed and usually scantily clad men against each other for the distinction of being declared the most attractive 'Jesus'.

The finalists at Dolores Park on Sunday included Doublecross Jesus (two saviours strung up on two conjoined hot pink crosses) and Hunky Cheese-us, a high concept trio of cheese-themed messiahs, with the winner announced as Michelangelo Jesus, pictured above.

Catholics have labelled the annual pageant blasphemous, but the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence insist the contest is all part of their mission to "promote universal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt".
