Nixon's sexuality was made public in 2004 after she parted from her husband in 2003, In a 2006 interview she said: "I never felt like there was an unconscious part of me around that woke up or that came out of the closet; there wasn't a struggle, there wasn't an attempt to suppress. I met this woman, I fell in love with her, and I'm a public figure."
She says she is happy to be thought of as a role model for gay youth and has expressed her admiration for the way many glbt youth overcome sexuality-based obstacles in their lives. She has two young children of her own.
Nixon will be honoured by the Point Foundation at a dinner next Monday 7 April. Confirmed celebrity guests include Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall.
