Lesbian actress Cynthia Nixon, who played Miranda in the hit US TV series Sex In The City, is to be honoured by an American fund which provides educational scholarships for gay students.

Nixon's sexuality was made public in 2004 after she parted from her husband in 2003, In a 2006 interview she said: "I never felt like there was an unconscious part of me around that woke up or that came out of the closet; there wasn't a struggle, there wasn't an attempt to suppress. I met this woman, I fell in love with her, and I'm a public figure."

She says she is happy to be thought of as a role model for gay youth and has expressed her admiration for the way many glbt youth overcome sexuality-based obstacles in their lives. She has two young children of her own.

Nixon will be honoured by the Point Foundation at a dinner next Monday 7 April. Confirmed celebrity guests include Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall.
