"Sorry, I'm calling in gay to work today"

Same-sex marriage supporters in the U.S. are urging LGBT people to "call in gay" to show how much America relies on its gay and lesbian citizens.

West Hollywood comedian Sean Hetherington, and his boyfriend Aaron Hartzler started a website called 'Day without a Gay', which encourages people to "take the day off work and volunteer to be of service."

The site has gotten over 100,000 hits since it began in mid-November, with dozens of non-profit agencies advertising for volunteers, and hundreds of people offering their services.

Wednesday 10 December is Call in Gay Day in Arizona, Florida and California.
