American Idol's runner-up Adam Lambert shared a kiss with his male keyboard player and simulated oral sex on stage at the American Music Awards last night - prompting complaints from some viewers upset by his sexy antics.

The ABC TV network says they received over 1,500 complaints about Lambert's show - which they describe as a 'moderate number'. An estimated 14.2 million viewers watched the awards ceremony.

The glam rocker, who came out publically as gay in June, says he didn't intend the show "to piss people off. It was to promote freedom of expression and artistic freedom."

"Part of what I love about being a live performer is that sometimes you just are in the moment and sometimes things just happen," he told CNN.

"I do feel like there's a bit of a double standard in the entertainment community, on television, on radio. I feel like women performers have been pushing the envelope, especially, for the past 20 years. And all of the sudden a male does it and everybody goes 'Oh, we can't show that on TV.'

"For me, that's a form of discrimination and a double standard," he argued.

Adam Lambert's American Music Awards performance is shown on the video below - the kiss is at 3:25".
