Auckland is NZ’s biggest city and is well established in its support of the LGBTQ+ community. Being named the best city to travel to in 2022 by Lonely Planet, Auckland celebrates its inclusivity of the rainbow community, some louder than others.
In the CBD sits Karangahape Road, affectionately known as K Road. K Road is the frontrunner for gay bars and gay venues in Auckland. Once known for its sex shops, brothels and strip clubs, over the past decade K Road has turned into a hub for the rainbow community to experience nightlife in a safe and welcoming environment.
With a plethora of art galleries, boutiques, op-shops, vintage stores and cafes, rainbow flags are displayed proudly in many businesses. Its peculiar, collective and alternative vibes have made it a favourite for locals and travellers alike with many gay-friendly venues, gay bars and parties being hosted regularly. Its stamp of solidarity with the gay Auckland community is that of its LGBTQ+ crosswalk, loud and proud in the middle of the K Road.
With K Road being the physical manifestation of the rainbow flag, what better place to delve into the amazing gay bars and gay venues that are accessible.
