Auckland's alternative women's night Proud Mary is joining forces with Strange News to bring JD Samson's MEN to Auckland for one night in February.

MEN is the high-energy Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective led by Le Tigre's JD Samson, who is a cult icon in the queer community.

The group will play at Proud Mary's second birthday on 23 February at 4:20.

It's a coup for the event, which has consistently brought Auckland women who love women the best up and coming music from the nation throughout its two years on K' Rd, as well as bringing over some top talent from across the Tasman.

MEN released its debut album Talk About Body in February this year and has toured with fellow queer acts Peaches and Gossip.

The group began in 2007 with the DJ/production/remix team of Le Tigre members Samson and Johanna Fateman. With Le Tigre on hiatus, when the duo began to write new songs, it made sense to merge their efforts with Samson's other new project Hirsute. JD and Hirsute members Michael and Ginger now comprise the core of MEN, with Fateman and artist Emily Roysdon contributing as writers, consultants, and producers.

Proud Mary is having its final event of 2011, an "Ender Bender" this Friday night, which you can win a double pass to here  and join Proud Mary's Facebook page for updates on tickets to the February event and side act announcements here
