United Future leader Peter Dunne is actively distancing himself from the gay marriage and apartheid comparison of a former MP he describes as a “serial nutter”.

Gordon Copeland has told the Select Committee hearing submissions on marriage equality legislation that allowing gay people to marry was like calling the New Zealand Maori rugby team "honorary whites" in the tour to South Africa.

“United Future completely dissociates itself from Copeland's comments - he is now a member of the Conservative Party,” Dunne has Tweeted.

Copeland stood split from United Future to start the short-lived Kiwi Party in 2007. He stood in Hutt South for the Conservative Party at the last election and received 3.17 per cent of the electorate vote.

Dunne says he was delighted when Copeland left United Future, adding “this guy is a serial nutter - like all Craig's lot,” referring to Conservative leader Colin Craig.

Dunne is in favour of marriage equality.
