Continuing a decades-long tradition a new Queen of Vinegar Hill has been chosen during a night of revelry and entertainment on the banks of the Manawatu River to see in the New Year.

Each year hundreds of glbti campers and their families descend on the DOC campground just north of Hunterville on SH1 to share each other's company for the Christmas/New Year break.

Medic Andrew Morgan, nicknamed the camp's 'own nurse Gladys Emmanuel' after the voluptuous district nurse in the Ronnie Barker comedy TV series Open All Hours, has been crowned after already being gonged by the outgoing queen for medical services provided to the campers.

"Brian Omundson started the first show with live music and saxophone," says Vinegar Hill correspondent Calum Bennachie. "Daniel closed the first act with a brilliant a capella rendition of I am what I am that wowed the crowd. The second act started with Lilly Loudmouth, doing My champagne tastes and your beer bottle wallet from Eartha Kitt."

Among other awards presented during the evening were "most hospitable campsite, for entertaining people and having a welcoming place for people to sit and chill by a bonfire was given to the Vinegar Hilton campsite," Bennachie reports. "Best lighting and technology was awarded to Shane and John from Auckland. Best campsite was won by the Vinegar Hill Ten Pin camp, for the effort they put into making their site look good. Miss Hospitality was won by Kale and Ms Butch was won by Naomi, both from Auckland."
