Motueka-born gay photographer Xavier Radic has had his artwork selected for a photographic exhibition in a New York gallery.
Called The Great Gay Photo Exhibition, the show runs in Manhattan's Leslie/Lohman Gallery from this week until 16 February.
Radic says he's been involved in photography for almost 40 years, with a particular interest in gay culture.
"In my images I challenge the view that the contemporary queer nude male is a specimen of physical perfection," he explains.
"The images carry forward both notions of the gaze and structural considerations of pose. These are used to present a consideration of more subtle issues of what being a queer man is."
Radic's images are presented in an early 20th century style, "by using opaque materials and substances to manufacture a veil or filter through which I then exposed the negative."
Radic holds retreats in Waihi for queer artists - from individuals to groups up to ten - involving painting, photography, drawing and relief painting mediums. For more information, email artium.elegantium@clear.net.nz.
