A timely documentary film exploring the global conflict between the Church and homosexuality will be screened in Auckland's Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Parnell tomorrow evening.
The 2007 documentary For the Bible Tells Me So premièred at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival to positive reviews – and scored a highly respectable 98% on film review aggregator website RottenTomatoes.com.
Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families – including those of Chrissy Gephardt, daughter of former Democrat Leader Richard Gephardt, and Anglican Bishop Gene Robinson – the documentary discovers how faith-lead people handle the bigotry and prejudice of their religion, and their own journeys of the realization of having a lesbian or gay child.
Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, the film offers a fresh look at the struggles of the gay community and the interpretation of the bible. The cry for love by the families interviewed is a compelling angle on the controversial 'Bible Vs. gays' issue which faces the church and our society today.
The documentary will screen at 7pm tomorrow Friday 29 August at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, cnr Parnell Rd and St Stephens Ave, Auckland, with coffee and cake in the visitors' centre to follow.
