18-year-old Shane Pilkington only started going out to Hamilton's gay nightclub a few months ago, but now that he's 2008's Mr. Gay Waikato, he'll be going a lot more – to spend his $500 bar tab.

At a well-attended competition night in the Victoria Street club on Saturday, Pilkington was one of five entrants - aged 18 to 22 - for the title. The guys appeared on stage in casual, fantasy and beachwear fashion rounds, to much cheering from their fans in the audience.

The young media student reckons he won because he decided on being an underwear model for his fantasy round. "Actually, I didn't know who would win, they were all good-looking and nice guys," he tells GayNZ.com modestly.

Pilkington won $750 worth of prizes including a voucher from Patrick's Hairdressing, and grooming products along with the big bar tab.

The night featured dag performances from Hamilton drag divas and Auckland guests Transaction, Louisa Vuitton, Sister Sledge, Britlee and Vudaur.
