With the Greens polling just over 6% in early results it is looking likely that gay man Kevin Hague will be a new MP. Hague is this evening in Nelson following results closely. "I'm feeling a weird combination of excitement and exhaustion," he says, "I'm trying not to count my chickens before they hatch.

Central Wellington is traditionally a Labour stronghold, but with 5% of the vote counted in Wellington Central, Labour's gay candidate Grant Robertson says so far "it's a pretty close call". Speaking to GayNZ.com from Labour's Wellington function in the Basin Reserve, he says he's still feeling positive after an exciting campaign. In the unlikely event he loses the Wellington Central electorate to National's Stephen Franks, Labour needs around 37% of the total party vote for Robertson to get into the House as a list MP.
