Getting into it: John Key in a routine with Buffy & Bimbo
|
Prime Minister John Key spoke from the main stage mid-afternoon, saying he was happy to be attending the BGO for the third time. He reiterated his promise from last year that the National-led government will not see any of the rights so hard fought for over many years by the glbt communities rolled back. No mention was made of stalled bills such as Metiria Turei's same-sex adoption bill which disappeared from the legislative calendar shortly before the general election.
Key acknowledged the NZ AIDS Foundation's work in fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS before dancing the macarena with entertainment stage hostesses Buffy and Bimbo. He was accompanied by National MPs Pansy Wong and Nikky Kaye.
Labour MPs accompanying party leader Phil Goff included Grant Robertson, Chris Carter and Charles Chauvel. Popular BGO attractions include the Urge and Family Bar party tents, the latest featuring a scissor hoist lifting people far above the crowd for a birds'-eye fiew of the loud and cheerful event.
Gays and lesbians are out on force, with a wide array of bodybuilders, leathermen and spectacular drag queens providing plenty of eye candy. Many gay or gay-related organisations have stands raising their profiles and drawing attention to their services. The Big Gay Out is due to officially end at 7pm.
