5.40PM: The 40-year old Auckland man arrested this afternoon on charges of infecting three men with HIV and a charge of attempted infection is facing up to 14 years in prison on each of the most serious charges and 7 years on the attempted infection charge.
Detective Sergeant Andy King, who is leading the investigation, says that the police now have four formal complaints lodged, though gay community sources suspect there are more gay men who may have been infected by the alleged 'HIV predator.' Police believe the man has been sexually active with women as well as men, but at this stage no women have laid formal complaints.
King says the man's name will not be released until his court appearance tomorrow and even then it may be subject to a suppression order. When he appears in the Auckland District Court police will oppose bail.
King reiterates that the investigation, which has been staffed by up to six officers, is ongoing and he is eager to hear from anyone else who thinks they may have come into sexual contact with the man either in Auckland or elsewhere. King can be contacted on (09) 302 6611.
