New Zealand's gayest street is getting a dedicated women's venue next month, as London's 'Scene Queen of the Century' brings her Candy bar to Auckland.
Candy bar NZ will open at K Road's gay-owned Naval & Family venue next month, as London and Brighton's Candy bar owner Kim Lucas, originally a New Zealander, is returning home after thirty years of work in the UK lesbian nightclub scene.
"The bar will be open Thursday through to Sunday initially, offering all kinds of fun and entertainment," Lucas tells GayNZ.com. "First class cocktails and tasty craft beers will be available from evening through to late night, lubrication lesbian social lives."
An ex-Candy bar London manager will also move to Auckland to run the bar. "Plus, New Zealand's top talent will be sought to entertain the punters nightly, and lesbian organisations and sports teams will be encouraged to make use of the bar for their social activities," says Lucas.
"Holiday packages will be available to make sure Candy bar NZ is available to all the girls through the country, with varying degrees of costs for anyone to be able to take advantage of this service."
Wayne Clark, owner of K' Road's Naval & Family venue, traditionally the home of popular fortnightly women's nights, says working with Candy bar is a great opportunity to show solid support of the development of the lively women's event scene in Auckland and through the country.
The Candy bar brand began in London's Soho area in 1996, and quickly became the epicentre of the city's lesbian scene. Another UK Candy bar opened in the seaside town of Brighton in 2000, leading UK lesbian magazine DIVA to name her 'Scene Queen of the Century' in their Millennium issue. She recently sold both venues.
