The Topp Twins have charmed New York, with the documentary telling their distinctive story winning a jury prize at NewFest 2010.
The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls has been judged Best Documentary Feature at the New York glbt film festival.
Lynda and Jools are thrilled their film is going over so well with US audiences. As Liza Minelli said:
“If we can make it here, we can make it anywhere, it's up to us ... New York New York New York.â€
The Leanne Pooley-directed film has shown at festivals across the globe since its release in April last year. Among its many awards are the People's Choice Award for Best Documentary at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Audience Award for Documentary at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
At home, it has taken in nearly $2 million at the box office, making it the most successful feature documentary ever released in New Zealand. It also won best low-budget feature and best original music at the Qantas Film and TV Awards last year.
The Topps performed in Northampton, Massachusetts, on Saturday to a sold-out show of 800 people.
