We've had a few reports of gay penguin couples around the South Island over the years, but could we now have lesbian albatrosses?
Two female royal albatrosses are incubating an egg, in an unusual pairing at Taiaroa Head's albatross colony near Dunedin, says the Otago Daily Times.
The area's head ranger says it's the third time a female-to-female pairing had been recorded on Taiaroa Head, which is the only mainland albatross breeding colony in the world.
The two females had shared nesting with a male two seasons ago, but that attempt at nesting was not successful, says the Department of Conservation ranger Lyndon Perriman.
The colony has a population of around 140 of the endangered birds. This breeding season has produced around 17 fertile eggs. © Copyright GayNZ.com |
