Lesbian talkshow host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres has announced that she and her girlfriend, actress Portia de Rossi, plan to marry in California.

The pair will take advantage of the striking down of California's law against same-sex marriage. The law change, by the California Supreme Court, is a major step forward USA advocates of same sex marriage, putting the state on a par with the only other state to so far allow the unions, Massachusetts. However, moral conservatives and church groups are expected to push for a national constitutional ban on same sex marriage.

DeGeneris and de Rossi announced their decision yesterday, the day the Court struck down the anti-gay law, during the recording of DeGeneres's TV show. de Rossi was a featured actress in the Ally McBeal TV show and currently stars in Nip/Tuck.
