A suspect has confessed to the murder of a 19-year-old gay student in his Manhattan apartment at the weekend.

Smothered: Kevin Pravia

Jeromie Cancel, 22, the alleged killer of, sat down in Kevin Pravia's apartment and watched the movie Saw just moments after smothering the teenager in his sleep, police sources told the New York Post.

Cancel told police that he watched the sadistic horror film early on Sunday, as the lifeless body of victim Pravia lay in a bed nearby.

"He's mentally imbalanced," says Cancel's dad, Jesus Soto. "He seemed off balance. He didn't seem right."

Cancel allegedly told police that he smothered and robbed Pravia, 19, after meeting him in Union Square at about 6am on Saturday.

The suspect allegedly told investigators that he bought drugs from Pravia – an allegation police highly doubt – before they went to the apartment.

Exactly why they went back to the apartment was unclear. "There was no indication of any sexual contact," a police source said.
