Rallies across America at the weekend spread the message that same-sex couples deserve marriage equality, in the wake of California's controversial passage of Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage.
LGBT equality activists in at least 38 States organised an estimated 150 protest rallies, with attendees holding up signs with slogans such as 'No More Mr. Nice Gay' and 'We're Not Asking For 5 Wives – Just One'.
The rally in New York City attracted over 10,000 people.
The website 'Join the Impact' has been a central point of protest organisation. Amy Balliett of Seattle started the site, and posted a message of thanks yesterday following the rally events.
"Last week, some felt angry. Last week, some felt defeated. Last week, some felt hopeless," she typed. "Today we have shown the world that we will not be victims anymore! Today, our community has risen and shown our opponents that we are MUCH MORE THAN 1 MILLION STRONG!
"We brought the world's attention to the outrage that is Proposition 8. We brought the conversation of equality into the living rooms of America and around the world!"
