California's Supreme Court has agreed to hear a legal challenge against the state's ban on gay marriage – but will let the ban stand in the meantime.

Since Proposition 8 on the state's ballot passed on 4 November, LGBT groups across California have rallied and protested, saying the ban in unfair and unconstitutional.

Reuters reports that the court wants to get the case underway early next year. Arguments on the amendment process, examples of the effect of Proposition 8 on same-sex marriages before the election, and views on whether the amendment violated the state's separation-of-powers doctrine will be heard.
