Johanna Sigurdardottir has now been officially appointed the leader of Iceland - so she's become the world's first lesbian Prime Minister.

Sigurdardottir and her centre-left Government are wasting no time dealing with the country's major financial crisis, which led the previous PM's early resignation.

Sigurdardottir, 66, a former flight attendant and union organizer, is also Iceland's first female Prime Minister. She married her companion Jonina Ledsdottir in 2002, according to AFP news agency, but while she's never been secretive about her sexuality, has never spoken publically about her relationships.

"I don't think her sexual orientation matters. Our voters are pretty liberal, they don't care about any of that," Sigurdardottir's secretary told BBC News.

Strictly speaking, she is the second-ever openly LGBT head of government in the world, since gay conservative Per-Kristian Foss became interim Prime Minister of Norway in 2002 - but only for one day.
