Twenty-one people were injured and five hospitalised on Sunday when a bomb exploded where people were gathering for the Sao Paulo Pride Parade in Brazil.
According to the Latin American Herald Tribune, the explosive device was thrown into a square in downtown Sao Paulo at 9pm, in an area where a number of busy LGBT-friendly bars were located.
"The bomb explosion scattered shrapnel, injuring many of those at the scene where 21 people had to be treated by a team of doctors and paramedics that had been mobilized for the parade," reported the newspaper.
"Most of the injuries were not serious and only five people had to be taken to hospital, doctors said."
Parade spokesman Pedro Xavier says it appears the person who threw the bomb from a high-rise building was "bothered by the noise of the huge parade," but added that the attack was probably premeditated, since "nobody has a bomb just sitting around at home."
The annual Sao Paulo Pride Parade is thought to be the largest in the world, attracting some 3 million people.
