A jury in London's Old Bailey court has found a gay man guilty of murdering his lover by hitting him over the head twice with a fire extinguisher.

The killer had made a series of internet searches including 'how to kill' and 'can blows to the head kill' in the days leading up to the murder.

Glenn Rycroft, 33, denied killing married father-of-three Gareth MacDonald, 30, in a hotel room near London in September 2007.

MacDonald had left his wife and children to move in with Rycroft after meeting him on the internet, reports the BBC. Rycroft claimed he left the hotal room as MacDonald had arranged to meet a male prostitute there, but he returned later to find his battered body.

But the court heard that MacDonald's shoes were splattered with Rycroft's blood, and his fingerprints were on the fire extinguisher.

MacDonald had become suspicious of Rycroft after he conned more than £200,000 (NZ$520,000) out of friends and family.
