HIV rates among gay men in many African countries are ten times higher than among the general population, reports The Lancet medical journal.

The article highlighted the need for more education and resources to encourage condom use around Africa, says the BBC.

Prejudice and harassment of gay people caused them to feel isolated, which in turn led to risky sexual practices, the study suggested.

Meanwhile, a study in Uganda has found that circumcision does not prevent transmission of HIV.

The research was ended abruptly to ensure women were not put at unnecessary risk of contracting HIV from circumcised men, who it was originally thought could not pass on the virus to their sexual partners.
