Following a complaint by 17-year-old Florida transgender jobseeker Zikerria Bellamy after she was told "we do not hire faggots" by the manager of her local McDonalds, the company has fired the manager.
Following an investigation, the individual employee who left the remark on Bellamy's voicemail has been dismissed, says a statement from McDonald's.
The employee "acted outside the scope of his authority and was not responsible," said a McDonald's spokesperson.
"McDonald's has a zero tolerance policy prohibiting discrimination or harassment in the restaurant," the company added.
Ballamy, who was born male but has been living as a female for about six years, had filed a complaint with the state's Human Rights Commission.
