US television network HBO is developing a biopic telling the story of former beauty queen, singer, celebrity Christian spokeswoman and outspoken anti-gay rights campaigner Anita Bryant.
Sex and the City creator Darren Star is set to direct the film, to be written by Runaway creator Chad Hodge.
"She is a fascinating person on every single level," explains Hodge, according to Reuters. "The twists and turns of her life are incredible."
Born in Oklahoma in 1940, Bryant was a beauty queen in the late 1950s and a pop music star through the 1960s. But in the 1970s she was a Christian campaigner, battling against the rights of gays and lesbians who were campaigning for non-discrimination measures.
One of the most iconic scenes involving Bryant came during a political debate in 1977, when she was hit in the face with a pie during an anti-gay speech. Video footage of the incident is shown below.
