The wife of a senior British Conservative MP is said to be 'completely traumatised' by his admission he is gay, which has ended their marriage of almost 20 years.
Prisons minister Crispin Blunt made what British media describe as a 'shock confession' on Friday that he has been living a lie.
Friends of his wife Victoria Blunt, a former banker, and the daughter of a wealthy American, havetold the Daily Mail she feels betrayed because she had sacrificed her career and used her fortune to support her husband's political life.
"She is completely traumatized," a source told the paper. "She has devoted most of her married life to playing the politician's wife and it was all built on a lie."
Another source told the Daily Mail, "She gave up everything for him. She is the perfect MP's wife and would attend every fete and garden party when Crispin was at the Commons."
Blunt went to great lengths to hide his sexuality, even once claiming homosexuality is 'not equivalent to heterosexuality' during a Parliamentary debate.
He added, "It is also clear that there is a much greater strand of homosexuality than of heterosexuality which depends for its gratification on the exploitation of youth."
