Australian marriage equality advocates say it's now time for the minority Government to get on with the job.
Labor leader Julia Gillard won the support of New South Wales independents Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott, adding to the backing of Melbourne Greens MP Adam Bandt and Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie.
It gives her the 76 votes on confidence and supply she needed to form a new Government.
Australian Marriage Equality National Convener Alex Greenwich expects Labor to be more open to moving forward on marriage equality now that it must negotiate with the Greens and independents.
”We repeat our call for a parliament-wide conscience vote on marriage equality because we believe an open and transparent debate will move the issue forward.
”If the independents are truly independent they will encourage a conscience vote regardless of their personal views.”
”It's time to get on with the job of achieving equality.”
